Data Analyst resume checker
SQL plus the specific BI tool they use, and one decision that was made differently because of your analysis.
What recruiters search
For this role: SQL, the BI tool named in the posting, Python or R.
The parsed text
What a parser pulled out of your file, so a broken layout is visible rather than invisible.
Specific rewrites
The weak lines replaced with ones you can use, not a note telling you to be more impactful.

Analyst postings are unusually literal about tools: a posting asking for Power BI often will not shortlist a Tableau-only resume, even though the skill transfers in a week. Name the tool if you have genuinely used it.
What a data analyst resume has to establish first
SQL plus the specific BI tool they use, and one decision that was made differently because of your analysis.
A reader decides whether to keep going within a few seconds, and that decision is made on the top third of page one. Everything after it is evidence for a judgement that has already started.
The terms recruiters search for
Recruiters find candidates by searching the database, so a term the posting uses and your document does not makes you absent from the results rather than rejected. For this role the searches tend to be:
- SQL
- the BI tool named in the posting
- Python or R
- the domain
- statistics or experimentation words
Cross off anything untrue, then make sure what remains appears in a real sentence about real work rather than in a keyword block. The method, and where its limit is.
Three mistakes data analyst resumes make
1. Listing tools without outcomes
A row of logos and tool names is the most common data resume there is. What question did somebody ask, and what did they do once you answered it?
2. Burying SQL
It is the single most searched term for this role. If it is in a skills block at the bottom, it is further down than it should be.
3. Dashboards as the achievement
Built a dashboard is a deliverable, not a result. Who used it, how often, and what changed is the result.
One line, rewritten
| What people write | What a reader can use |
|---|---|
| Created dashboards in Tableau for the sales team | Built the pipeline-health dashboard the sales team now runs their Monday forecast on, replacing a spreadsheet three people maintained by hand |
The left column describes a job that existed. The right describes a person who did something. You do not need impressive numbers, only actual ones.
If you are applying outside the United States
Most of the world calls this document a CV, and the conventions differ enough to matter. The data analyst CV version of this page covers the licensing and length differences.
Before you send it
Select all the text in your resume, copy it, and paste it into any plain text editor. That is close to what the screening software receives. If your name and number are missing, or your job titles have merged into your dates, you have found something worth fixing before anything else.
Questions people ask
- What should a data analyst resume lead with?
- SQL plus the specific BI tool they use, and one decision that was made differently because of your analysis.
- Which keywords matter for a data analyst?
- Recruiters tend to search SQL, the BI tool named in the posting, Python or R. Use the posting's own wording for anything that is true of you, in a sentence about real work rather than a keyword list.
- How long should a data analyst resume be?
- One page early in your career, two once you have enough that matters. A parser does not care; a reader cares about the top third of page one, which is a different problem.
- Is the first check really free?
- Yes, with no account and no card. After that it is one payment for unlimited checks rather than a monthly subscription.
